Landscape Design Process
Often the question comes up – “How does this work – hiring a designer?” The answer is that each design process is different – depending on the
needs of the client, the budget, and the scope of the job. Some clients do a
lot
of the groundwork themselves, and others want to leave most all of it up to the designer. The goal is to design a space that reflects the style of the home, the lifestyle of the owners, and
gives something special that draws people out into the garden.
Part of the process of designing is to inform the homeowners of ways to install and use their garden that will be environmentally wise. Donna shares her knowledge of
irrigation techniques, amendments, mulching, fertilizing, and plant selection to make the garden a ‘plus’ towards a healthier ecosystem.
A designer’s job is to solve the ‘puzzles’ that each garden presents, offer solutions that make the most sense and will bring a smile. A recent client from Mountain View wrote in a note ‘Thank you for your perseverance and diligent attention to all our needs. We
love our garden’.
Landscape Design Process
Step #1: Site Work and Information Gathering
Starting with a scale drawing of the property, photographing, and meeting with the homeowners to hear their goals and concerns
Step #2: Conceptual Design
Based on the information gathered in Step #1, sketches are created to show the design ideas. Photographs are often used to convey more ideas
Step #3: Refined Plan
Based on the discussion and feedback of the conceptual designs, a revised design is created. Material samples are gathered. Plant material is discussed
Step #4: Master Plan, including hardscape and planting plan
The final plan that is used for contractor bids and installation is presented to the homeowner. Materials to be used are specified, and a plant list included.
